Interdisciplinary Perspectives on the New Immigration: Course # INTE-GE.2545
Meets Mon, Tues, Wed and Thurs, 2:00 – 5:00pm, 5/21/2012 – 6/9/2012

The objective of this course is to introduce students to a sampling of recent theoretical and empirical work, in various academic disciplines, dealing with immigration. We will achieve this objective by systemically examining very recent research in comparative and interdisciplinary perspectives with a particular focus on the emerging Inter-American immigrant system. Students will learn about the most recent trends in Latin American, Caribbean, and to a lesser extent Asian migration to the US, and will compare the nature of current immigration scholarship in the United States to developments in other postindustrial settings. An examination of the comparative materials will highlight isomorphic conditions – as well as difference – in immigration debates, policies, processes, and outcomes. This course will be interdisciplinary. We shall examine recent data and theoretical work in a variety of fields such as economics, education, law, policy, psychology, socio-cultural anthropology, sociolinguistics and sociology. Graduate students from all schools are welcome to enroll in this course.

Please contact the course instructor, Marcelo Suarez-Orozco (mso3@nyu.edu) with any questions.

Higher Education and the Engaged Imagination: Representation of Colleges and Universities: Course #HPSE-GE 2130
Meets Fridays, 12:00pm – 1:40pm for the Fall 2012 Academic Semester

This innovative course interrogates the idea, “How do we know what we know about higher education?” By applying a humanistic method the course engages the imagination of writers and readers, in discovering and re-discovering the meaning, history, and purposes of higher education. Through the lens of literature, but also of the other arts and media, students will understand the hopes, fears, and conflicts associated with higher education.

Open to all doctoral students, and advanced M.A. Students (with permission) from Laurie Behringer (aurie.behringer@nyu.edu). A 3 units (elective) course.

Please contact Catharine Stimpson, University Professor and Dean Emerita, Graduate School of Arts and Science, catharine.stimpson@nyu.edu at with any questions
